Strong inequalities impacting girls and their education.

GIRL'S EDUCATION

- 1 -

Around the world, 132 million girls are out of school according the UNESCO.

- 2 -

In countries affected by conflict, girls are twice as likely to be out of school than girls living in non-affected countries. If girls do enter school, only a small portion will complete secondary education.

- 3 -

Again and again, poverty is an important factor for determining whether a girl can complete her education. Low family income, living in underserved locations or belonging to minority groups are disadvantages weighing on girls’ abilities to go forward in life.

- 4 -

Violence is also a factor preventing girls accessing or completing education. Girls are often forced to walk long distances to go to school which makes them vulnerable to attacks. Most recent data shows that 60 million girls are sexually assaulted on their ways to school.

- 5 -

An estimated 246 million children are victim of violence in or around school every year. Teen pregnancies are often a result of these acts of violence. Girls who become pregnant face strong stigma and discrimination, some are excluded from their communities.

- 6 -

Child marriage are also preventing girls from completing their education. They’re also more likely to become pregnant early and be victim of violence from their partners. According to a new study, 41000 under the age of 18 are getting married everyday.

- 7 -

Ending child marriage could enable girls to continue their education and therefore increasing their potential earnings. Ending child marriage could generate $500 billion in benefit every year.

...Ending extreme poverty, fighting the spread of communicable diseases and ending child marriage are three global priorities that required urgent support. The Yummy Company is committed to supporting all three of them.
